With botanical experts forecasting one of the most spectacular autumn displays in recent years, visitors to Hergest Croft Gardens in Kington are promised a front-row view of this seasonal spectacle.

As chlorophyll fades from the leaves, other natural pigments – carotene, anthocyanins and tannins – take over, transforming the landscape with shades of gold, crimson and copper.

Following a warm, sunny summer and with the right balance of cool, dry nights, trees across the country are expected to deliver a vivid and lasting display this year.

Known as “the hidden gem of the Welsh Marches”, Hergest Croft Gardens is home to one of the largest privately owned arboretums in the UK.

Its six distinct gardens and parkland showcase more than 5,000 rare trees and shrubs, including the National Collections of Zelkovas and Maples, as well as 130 champion trees. Together, they make the gardens one of the country’s most breathtaking destinations for autumn colour.

This year’s display coincides with the Autumn Plant Fair on Saturday, 12 October, when more than 60 exhibitors – from specialist growers of rare and unusual trees to artisan food, drink and craft makers – will gather at the gardens.

The event offers visitors the chance to enjoy both the dazzling seasonal landscape and a day of horticultural inspiration.

Austyn Hallworth, head of marketing and PR at Hergest Croft Gardens, said: “Autumn is always a special time at Hergest Croft, but this year could prove to be truly exceptional.

“We’ve had a very warm and sunny summer and this enables trees to build the sugar reserves that help to create the vibrant colours. With our unrivalled collections of trees, visitors can really experience the science of autumn colour in action and see why our gardens are regarded as one of the finest places in Britain to enjoy this spectacular event.”

Hergest Croft Gardens are open daily from 11am to 4.30pm. Admission is £9 for adults and free for children under the age of 16. Further details, including season tickets and event information, are available at www.hergest.co.uk .

The attraction is a member of MWT Cymru, the independent membership organisation representing more than 600 tourism and hospitality businesses across Powys, Ceredigion, Southern Eryri (Snowdonia) and the Welsh Marches.
