Builth Wells Rotary recently organised the local heats of the Rotary Young Photographer Competition 2026 at Ysgol Calon Cymru High School, Llandrindod Wells campus.
The competition challenges pupils to produce an image inspired by a set theme. This year’s theme, ‘Happiness in Nature’, gave entrants plenty of scope for their own interpretation. Each participant was also asked to provide a brief sentence explaining the meaning behind their photograph and what inspired it.
Students from Years 8, 10 and 12 were presented with certificates by Builth Wells Rotary president Hugh Garner. Among the winners, Year 10 pupil Phoebe Spencer-Green impressed with a portrait of a goat, while Year 8 winner Sofia Toma captured a dog sitting in a sink planter, searching for mice.
Sofia was surprised to learn that her entry had also won at district level and will now go on to represent the area in the regional final, which will be held at the Senedd.
The club also welcomed judge Bob Walls, chairperson of Builth Wells Photographic Club. He and fellow members are keen to encourage novice photographers to develop their skills.
