An Aberedw resident is turning Builth’s swimming pool into the English Channel, by swimming its equivalent length to raise money for the charity Aspire.

Helen Tuite has so far raised over £100 for the challenge, which will take place over 18 weeks at Freedom Leisure swimming pool in Builth.

“I started at the beginning of September, swimming 80 lengths a week,” Helen said. “I have swum about 7 miles so far, so about a third of the way through, and aiming to complete the 22 miles just before Christmas. Over 60s can go swimming for free twice a week, which is a bonus. I am aiming to raise £1,408 for Aspire, which equates to £1 for every length I swim.”

Every two hours someone is paralysed by Spinal Cord Injury and Aspire provides the essential equipment, advice and housing that spinal cord injured people need to live their lives independently.

Helen, whose father was in a wheelchair due to MS, said: “My father was in a wheelchair for most of his adult life, so I know how something like this can affect a person's life and the lives of their family. In spite of his disability, he managed to swim a mile for charity in our local pool in Solihull just using his arms to propel him through the water. So I guess I'm following in his 'footsteps' by doing this. Swimming is such a great activity, and if, by taking part in this challenge, I can raise money for such a worthy cause, then it's a win-win. I've set myself a huge goal, but even if I just manage to achieve half that amount, I'll be pleased.”

Aspire is running the challenge from September until December and has so far raised over £25,000. They offer a twenty-two mile swim option, as well as 11 and 44 mile options. Those looking to get involved can choose to share the miles and swim as a team.
