VISIT Brecon, the new tourist office in central Brecon, has been “exceptionally busy” since it opened at the end of May, according to visitor experience manager Alison Meacham.
The new office has opened in Lion Yard, between Clarks Gift Shop and the Independent Advisory Centre. It is being funded by Brecon town council after Powys County Council withdrew funding for Brecon’s purpose-built tourist information centre in the main shopping car park. The new premises are much smaller but Mrs Meacham says it has not stopped people finding out where the service is.
To help her she has a team of 35 people who have signed up as volunteers following a successful volunteer recruitment day before the Visit Brecon office opened. Alison said although she was “delighted” with the response from volunteers there was still room for more because many of those who had signed up had “varying availability”. She suggested volunteering at the centre might be something students wishing to fulfil the community element of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme would be willing to do.
She said: “The response from everyone has been brilliant. We were so annoyed when the tourist information centre shut – it’s good that the town has come together to provide the service.”
