CAMPAIGNERS are hoping to save an ancient Breconshire oak tree from the axe after safety concerns are raised.

The great oak at Tregaer, near Erwood has a split in its trunk and Powys County Council, after receiving a tree surgeon's report in August, recommended that the tree be felled for reasons of public safety.

The council have now agreed to consider a second report after the original report was reviewed by Ray Woods, an advisor for the Woodland Trust in Wales, and he requested that a report be carried out by an arboriculturalist to assess the options for reducing any risk from the tree to the public to an acceptable level.
