COULD this picture finally solve a mystery that has haunted ghost hunters for years?.

The outline of a stern face was caught by local history buff Louie Evans who’d been taking photographs on his iPhone of the 14th century tower at Brecon Castle.

Supermarket worker Louie said: "I took two photos, one after the other and when I looked at them again I saw a face. It is in the second photo not the first. You can see a hat, eyes, nose and lips.

"I showed it to my dad and he could see the face as well."

The 27-year-old said he’d been walking around the grounds of the castle, which is now part of the Castle of Brecon Hotel, on Monday evening when he took the photographs of a gap at the base of the tower.

"I think it might be a tunnel. I took some wood that was in the gap out and tried crawling in but I couldn’t get in. I took some photos of the gap.

"I noticed the face in the pictures when I came back into the hotel and had a glass of coke. I showed it to a few people in the bar and they thought it looked odd.

"I’ve never seen anything like it before," said Louie who admitted he would be nervous about returning to the grounds unaccompanied.

"I had come up to take photos of the tower as I like the castle, it fascinates me."

The castle was built on the orders of Norman lord Bernard de Neufmarche, from 1093 onwards. The tower was built during the early 14th century.

Louie thinks the apparition could be that of Henry Stafford, the second Duke of Buckingham and Lord of Brecon who retired to the castle after falling out with Richard III.

He plotted against the king with the Bishop of Ely, John Morton who was a prisoner at the castle but after raising an army against the king was executed.

Henry’s son, Edward, was born at Brecon castle in 1478 and inherited his father’s titles and lands.

"I reckon it could be the ghost of the Duke of Buckingham, his son was born in the castle. It looks like a medieval man," said Louie who added he’d previously read about a ghost possibly haunting the castle.

Hotel receptionist Sarah Williams said staff have previously feared a female ghost has been stalking a room at the hotel.

"The housekeepers used to say the ghost of a lady called Lucy was in room 35. They said they could tell she had been in the room, things would have been moved or they could just feel there had been a presence."
