THESE are the scenes at Knighton Church in Wales School where a petition has been launched after new arrangements for picking up children were put in place.
The primary school said it has had to close an alternative entrance after a child was nearly hit by a car in the staff car park.
Youngsters are no longer able to enter and leave the school via a side entrance at Farrington Lane and parents have been told to only use the main entrance on the busy Ludlow Road - causing concern to some parents.
Since the change, introduced after the Christmas holidays, more parents have been parking along Ludlow Road, near to the town’s football ground.
One mum said on Facebook: "As both a parent and a driver I am not seeing the logic in this move. From my own experience this week I think what’s happening at the football club is extremely dangerous, the parking along the entrance, the sheer amount of children on that main road, the gridlock of cars that is spilling into the main road and the lack of a footpath is an accident waiting to happen. It’s causing school pick up and drop off to be incredibly stressful for both parents and children."
Brecon and Radnorshire Conservative MP Chris Davies and the party’s Welsh Assembly candidate Gary Price have now arranged a petition calling on the council to review the situation, in consultation with parents, guardians, school governors and the local community.
The school has said said the new arrangement was put in place following a near miss involving a child in the school car park and a recommendation from inspectors Estyn. It added it supports working parents by opening its free breakfast club early and supervising the playground for twice as long as it is legally required.
It also supplies free parking passes for the nearby Bowling Green Lane car park.
