Two members of a South Wales male voice choir will cycle around 230km across three days in a challenge to raise money for a new piece of music.

Côr Meibion De Cymru, the South Wales Male Choir, will stage Song Cycle 2026 from Wednesday, September 2 to Friday, September 4.

The challenge will see the two choir members travel across the choir’s geographical region, beginning near Cirencester and finishing in Llandeilo.

Money raised will fund the commissioning of a new work for male voices, which the choir plans to premiere in spring 2027.

Côr Meibion De Cymru is the only regional male choir in South Wales and has members spread across a wide area, from Aberystwyth in the west to Gloucestershire and Wiltshire in the east.

The choir holds weekly rehearsals at three locations, with full choir rehearsals taking place monthly in Cwmafan, near Port Talbot.

The cycling challenge has been planned to reflect that geographical spread, while also linking two of the choir’s rehearsal sessions.

The cyclists will join the choir’s rehearsal near Cirencester on Wednesday evening before setting off towards the old Severn crossing on Thursday.

They will cross into Wales and continue through Chepstow, Usk and Abergavenny before heading into Bannau Brycheiniog.

After stopping west of Abergavenny, the cyclists will tackle the route towards Sennybridge on Friday, including a steep climb before crossing the mountains into the Towy Valley.

The challenge will finish in Llandeilo, where the cyclists will join the choir’s Friday evening rehearsal in Ffairfach.

The route includes several significant climbs, including one described by organisers as among the toughest ascents in Bannau Brycheiniog.

The choir said the fundraising would help it develop new repertoire while supporting the future of male voice singing in Wales.

Its 2026 concert programme includes performances at venues in Southampton, Llandeilo, St David’s Cathedral, Cardiff, Newport, Cirencester and Chippenham.

The choir also has a history of fundraising for charitable causes.

In May, members raised more than £15,000 for Alzheimer’s Society Cymru after performing at 10 bandstands across South Wales in a single day.

The performances stretched from Pembrokeshire to Cardiff and involved singers travelling between venues throughout the day.

Song Cycle 2026 will take place as the choir continues its programme of concerts and rehearsals across Wales and England.
