A church in Brecon will be hosting a community day tomorrow which will showcase local businesses before hosting its first ever pet service on Sunday.
St David’s Church in Llanfaes will open its doors to the public from 10am until 4pm tomorrow, Saturday, where guests will be able to hear from local clubs, groups and societies.
The community day will also include activities for children, crafts, stalls, and a small bouncy castle for children aged three to five.
Priest in Charge Judy Day said: “There will be lots of activities for people to enjoy in the church, the parish hall and on the field.
“There will be about six gazebos on the field and there will be lots of activities for the children. There will be a small bouncy castle in the church for the smaller children.”
They day will also feature the Brecon Singers and the Alive and Kickin’ Choir to provide music throughout the day, as well as activities for people to try like yoga, flower arranging or making a fishing fly.
The church’s bell ringers will also be at the community day where they will be opening the outside doors so guests can watch them ring and have a go at ringing the bells.
Refreshments and cream teas will also be available from stalls such as well as an ice cream van and a burger van.
Reverend Day, who has been the Priest in Charge for around a year, said: “The idea is for the church and the community to join together for a happy day for everyone.
“We’re pleased with the weather forecast and we hope it stays like that.”
On the following Sunday the church will host the town’s first pet service, meaning visitors can bring their beloved companions for a blessing.
The pets service starts at 2pm on Sunday, September 15 – after the usual Sunday morning service and guests are asked to arrive by 1.45pm.
Refreshments and activities for children will also be available on Sunday as well as music to sing along to.
Reverend Day said: “We’re having a Well Springs Gathering which anybody can come to whether they have faith, no faith or they’re not sure and the pet service is part of that.
The Well Springs Gathering is to do with the spring that St David drank from when he is thought to have passed through Llanfaes hundreds of years ago.
Reverend Day, who has a cat and a dog, said: “It’s the first, to my knowledge in Brecon although I believe they have had them in some of the villages on the outskirts of the town like in Llanhamlach.
“I’ve got pets and I’m bringing my dog with me to church. I thought it would be a nice way to say thank you for pets and all the happiness they bring us.
“My granddaughter Tegan Barnard is a veterinary nurse and she’ll be there as well. She’ll be talking to the children and parents about animal care. She’s got horses as well as dogs and cats.”
This weekend is one of the community-based weekends scheduled by the church which will also be hosting events for Harvest and by the food bank in October.
