More than 50 people seeking sanctuary from Swansea were welcomed to Clyro Church in Wales Primary School on Sunday, November 2, for a day of connection and support.
The event, organised by Hay Brecon and Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees (HBTSR) and the school, brought together families, volunteers, and local residents for a chance to share food, conversation, and activities in a warm and welcoming environment.
Headteacher Heulwen Stevens, alongside HBTSR’s Claire and Lynne, led the event, which featured a wide range of activities for all ages. Children enjoyed face painting with Claire and Michelle, pottery workshops led by Gaynor, and nature walks through the school grounds. Forest School activities, organised by Heulwen, included toasted marshmallows and outdoor exploration. For adults and older children, Emily, Jenny, and the school’s quilting group helped participants create unique textile projects, while Gez and Sue led guided walks. Local police officers joined the celebrations, delighting children and adults alike by allowing them to sit in patrol cars and even activate the sirens.
Transport could have been a challenge, with a bus strike affecting Swansea, but First Choice coaches worked flexibly to pick up participants from multiple locations, ensuring everyone could attend.
Volunteers and local businesses provided generous support. Volunteer chefs Gayan and Thanu prepared fresh meals, while Bernie, Jan, Gail, and others contributed stews, soups, and cakes. Hay Wholefoods, Talgarth Mill, and Castle Greengrocer’s Shop all offered essential backing for the event.
Lynne told the Brecon & Radnor Express: “This event has been an incredible demonstration of the power of community. We’ve come together to show the people seeking sanctuary that they are valued and appreciated. Everyone involved, from the volunteers to the local businesses, has helped to create a day that will be remembered by all for years to come.”
The generosity of the day extended beyond the event itself, with surplus cakes and biscuits taken to the drop-in support group in Swansea.
Guests expressed their thanks, many commenting on the warmth and generosity they experienced. One participant said: “We will never forget this empathy and sincerity. We hope to continue living a good life with you dear people.” Another added, “The food was colourful and delicious, and the hospitality was amazing. It’s something I will always cherish.”
Claire added: “This is what community is about - coming together, supporting one another, and showing that we are stronger when we stand united.”
The day ended with visitors returning to Swansea, with hearts full and spirits high.
HBTSR would like to thank all the volunteers, supporters, and participants for making this day a celebration of community spirit. The group looks forward to hosting many more events like this in the future.
