Dozens of local families, from across Brecon’s schools, enjoyed a fantastic day at the seaside this week after a community-organised coach trip took families to Barry Island for a day of fun, friendship and summer memories.
The trip, which was organised by Councillor Matthew Dorrance, Priory School Headteacher Claire Pugh and Powys County Council staff Jan Smith and Adele Evans, proved hugely popular, with two Williams Coaches fully booked and a waiting list for places.
The initiative was designed to give local families an affordable opportunity to enjoy a traditional seaside day out during the summer holidays.
Councillor Matthew Dorrance said: "Our Barry Island coach trip was absolutely fantastic. It was wonderful to spend the day with families from across our community enjoying the seaside, making memories and having fun together.
“What made the day so special was the incredible community spirit behind it. Events like this don't happen on their own and I am enormously grateful to everyone who helped organise, fundraise and support the trip.
“Claire Pugh from Priory Church in Wales School, Jan Smith and Adele Evans have worked tirelessly to help make this happen. Their commitment to local families is remarkable and I want to thank them for everything they have done.
“I would also like to thank Zeera Indian Restaurant for hosting a fundraising evening, and Brecon Rotary, Time Out at St Mary's and Rev Rich Wootten for their generous support. Thanks are also due to Williams Coaches for once again providing an excellent service, to Clark's the Toy Shop, and to our catering volunteers for preparing packed lunches for families attending the trip.
“Most importantly, thank you to all the families who joined us. Seeing children and parents enjoying a day by the sea made all the hard work worthwhile."
The trip was coordinated through the Brecon Area Community Action Group, with volunteers providing support throughout the day, packed lunches for attendees and an ice cream on the seafront.
Organisers say the success of the trip highlights the strength of community partnership working in Brecon, bringing together schools, local businesses, community groups, churches and volunteers to create opportunities for local families.
