Residents from the French town of Mériel were given a warm welcome in Llanwrtyd Wells this week, as the two twinned communities came together to celebrate their long-standing friendship.
The visit forms part of an ongoing cultural exchange between the towns, which have built strong links through regular visits, shared events and community collaboration. The partnership, supported by the Friends of the Mériel–Llanwrtyd Twinning group, continues to strengthen ties between residents in both countries.
During their stay, the visitors enjoyed a packed itinerary that showcased the best of local life. This included a visit to Ysgol Dolafon, where they met pupils and staff, as well as time spent at the local youth club, helping to build connections between younger members of both communities.
A highlight of the week was a celebratory evening held on Wednesday, bringing together residents and guests for an event filled with friendship and cultural exchange.
The group also visited the Llanwrtyd and District Heritage & Arts Centre. The centre’s manager said: “It was an absolute pleasure to welcome the visitors back, adding that it was great to catch up and continue nurturing the relationship.”
Mériel, located near Paris in the Val-d’Oise department, is also known as the birthplace of renowned French filmmaker Jean Gabin.
Just north of the French capital, Mériel and the quaint Powys town have been twinned for over 25 years, with the partnership being established in 2000. The partnership was formally established in 2000, but stems from connections made in the 1980s, resulting in alternating visits and close friendship ties between the two.
The latest visit marks another successful chapter in the twinning relationship, with both towns reaffirming their commitment to maintaining strong cultural and social links for years to come.
