A group of local people who are deeply concerned for the citizens of Gaza, have been holding a vigil in Brecon for an hour every fortnight for over two years.

On Saturday, 25 April, Brecon Palestine Support group stood outside St Mary’s Church from 11am – 12pm for the fiftieth time since March 2024.

“A 50th Vigil for such a humanitarian disaster can hardly be described as a celebration but more like a disgrace – the disgrace of our political class and their complicity and tacit support for Israeli and US war crimes. We will continue to maintain our witrness for and solidarity with the Palestinian people,” said a spokesperson for the Brecon Palestine Support group.

The group hand out information on the history of the conflict and display placards.

“Turning up just once a fortnight in light of the atrocious suffering experienced by the people of Gaza, the occupied territories and now Lebanon and Iran seems the least we can do,” said the spokesperson for the support group. “We have also organised three well-attended fundraising and consciousness-raising events in Brecon over the last two years and have raised more than £4,000 for Palestinian charities.

“Our experience from the vigil tells us that the majority of residents and visitors to Brecon are in sympathy with the plight of the Palestinian people.”
