POWYS County Council is reviewing the future of its highway depots in a bid to save £2 million a year.

The council said the review is part of its response to its budget with the authority faced with having to save £27m over the next three financial years.

The highways department has been set a savings target of £2m a year for the next three years and the review of all its depots is part of its response.

Concerns have been raised the authority’s highway depot at Dan y Parc, Crickhowell could be closed as a result of the review.

The town’s Liberal Democrat county councillor, John Morris said it was important the council maintained a network of depots that store road gritters, salt and other items used to maintain the county’s roads.

Councillor Morris said: "In a rural area it is vital to have yards available locally. In adverse weather if the yard closes there is no guarantee that local council workers could get to Brecon to start clearing roads.

"This proposal is to save money but I do not see how this would be achieved and could cause many problems."

The Liberal Democrat AM for Brecon and Radnorshire, Kirsty Williams: "I hope these proposals do not make it off the ground. When bad weather hits in this area, we need to be able to clear our roads as quickly as possible to ensure the safety of our constituents.

"I have major fears that the sale of Crick’ yard will limit our availability to do that."

Ms Williams said closing Crickhowell depot would be short sighted and urged residents to contact the council with their views.
