Powys County Council has confirmed that Crickhowell Bridge is set to reopen on Tuesday February 18, after being closed over the weekend.

The 18th-century bridge, which spans the River Usk, had been closed off to vehicles and pedestrians on Sunday after it had sustained damage caused by Storm Dennis. It connects the town with the nearby communities including Llangattock and without use of the bridge anyone wishing to cross could face diversions of up to 14 miles. It is expected to open at some point on Tuesday.

Councillor Jackie Charlton, in a message shared on social media and who is the county councillor for area also said the bridge will re-open. She wrote: “Engineers have inspected the Bridge and it will be opened tomorrow. There will be constant monitoring. If the water levels rise to where the damage is then it will have to be closed again. The river has gone down a lot today and with this small respite it is hoped all will be well.”

Crickhowell has been one of the worst hit areas and many businesses have been forced to close their doors to deal with floodwater.

Crickhowell- based bookshop Book-ish have described the weather as “the worst flooding in Crickhowell since 1979” in a social media post. The Bridge End Inn, a popular pub on the banks of the River Usk, has been badly affected by the flooding and have said they will be ‘closed until further notice’.

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) have said that the extent of the flooding was "unprecedented" and there was a "huge" amount of rain.

Donna Littlechild from NRW said on Monday: "With further rain forecast for the next few hours, we are urging people to heed advice from ourselves and emergency services."

A further Met Office yellow warning for rain has been issued from 18:00 on Wednesday until 15:00 on Thursday in areas of south, mid and north Wales.
