CUTS to youth services in Powys will see only five traditional youth clubs kept open throughout the county.

The county council aims to slash £550,000 from the youth service budget over the next three years.

Youth clubs will be kept open at Brecon, Llandrindod Wells and Ystradgynlais as well as at Newtown and Welshpool but traditional youth clubs in smaller towns will close.

They will be replaced with support through local schools and what the council is calling targeted provision.

The council will also look at commissioning and procuring a range of local youth activities in communities.

Youth workers will continue to have a part-time presence at high schools, colleges and pupil referral units as part of the changes, where young people will be to access information, advice support and mentoring as well as information on youth projects.

Young people and youth organisations will be asked in the summer what youth activities and projects they want to see when the changes come into effect in the autumn.

Councillor Graham Brown, cabinet member for youth services, said: "Our youth services are highly thought of by our young people but the way they are currently provided is not sustainable financially. We have had to make some very difficult decisions if we are to meet our £550,000 savings target.

"Young people in the county will still be able to access advice, support and information and will be able to participate in projects in the future. "We’re just changing the way they will be provided from the autumn but we believe we’ve created an innovative approach to a youth service that will continue to deliver for our young people but cost us less."
