A HAIR salon and beautician’s has re-opened after a car crash destroyed its front window but could be facing a £100,000 repair bill.

Hey Hair in Castle Street, Hay-on-Wye, was closed for three days after the alleged hit and run crash in the early hours Monday, January 22.

The brick work underneath the bay window of the grade II listed property had been completely destroyed and has had to be temporarily rebuilt while the wall had buckled.

Hairdresser Rebecca Whitney said the shop was able to re-open on Thursday, January 25: “We’ve reopened after a temporary repair job but we expect to have to close again for the full repair. The quotes we’ve had have been anywhere from £50,000 to £100,000 because the building is grade II-listed. Customers have been really understanding and everyone has been really kind but customers will have to get their hair cut and if we have to close we could lose trade and we don’t know how long we could be closed for.

“The work has to be assesed by the national park and all the bricks, which the council took away, they will have to bring them back so it is messing them around as well.”

The building is owned by a landlord and Ms Whitney said it she is currently waiting to see if a claim can be made against the driver’s insurance.

Ms Whitney is the owner of the hair salon and Kelly Shannon is the owner of the Cutie-Kels beauty salon that shares the premises.

n Dyfed-Powys Police said last week a 32-year-old man from the Hay-on-Wye area had been released under investigation after being arrested on suspicion of failing to stop at a collision, driving while unfit through drink or drugs and criminal damage.
