TWO World War One grenades have been recovered from a garage in a Brecon Beacons village.

An Army explosive ordnance disposal unit, based at the Ashburn Army camp near Tewkesbury, removed the decommissioned explosives from a garage in Llanfrynach on Tuesday.

An Army spokesman based in Brecon, confirmed the unit had attended at the village outside Brecon: "They were called out to Llanfrynach and it turned out to be two World War One decommissioned grenades. There was no threat to the public and they were recovered and will be taken back to the base and destroyed."

The spokesman confirmed the devices were no longer explosive.

A spokeswoman for Dyfed Powys Police said the devices had been found on Monday and it was thought they had been there for some years.

She said there was no criminal investigation in relation to the discovery.

Stephen Williams, the vice chairman of Llanfrynach Community Council, said he’d been unaware of the drama.

He said he’d been told there was no threat to the public after contacting police: "Police confirmed there was an incident but wouldn’t say anymore than that and it was being handled by one of our partner agencies.

"Whether that’s Special Branch, MI5, the SAS or the Army I don’t know.

"The police said there was nothing at all to be alarmed about and there was no need to warn people of a big bang."
