A DRUGS charity has promised its Llandrindod Wells base will remain in use for its purpose - after its £120,000 purchase breached grant conditions.

Kaleidoscope, which provides support to drug and alcohol users across Powys, established its base at the former Grosvenor Bakery in Llandrindod Wells after one of its own employees bought the building at auction in late 2011 and then transferred ownership to the charity.

Its chief executive Martin Harvey has said it has agreed with the council the building will be used as a base for a drugs service for the next 15 years, even if that service is no longer provided by Kaleidoscope.

It reimbursed the employee, with the £120,000 tab eventually picked up by Powys County Council using a substance misuse grant from the Welsh Government.

But the property has remained under the ownership of Kaleidoscope - in breach of the conditions of the grant, which stated the building should be owned by Powys County Council.
