A special report written by Year 6 pupils at Hay-on-Wye primary school.
Usually, at this time of year, we gather together as a whole school to celebrate Harvest.
Harvest Festival in Hay Primary School is always a blast, with different hymns being sung, competitions taking place and is topped off, with a whole school assembly, to enjoy the time of year and to celebrate the work and efforts which have been put in by farmers around the county to produce the wonderful food we eat daily!
Every class throughout the school learns something; such as poems, prayers and dances.
Our school choir also learn harvest songs, such as Big Red Combine Harvester, Mr. Scarecrow and, everyone’s favorite, Conker’s. As well as dances, songs and poems, the younger classes normally show off their art skills, which always amaze the rest of the school!
This year, due to Covid 19, we have unfortunately not been able to do all of our usual celebrations.
Over the years, Harvest Festival has been an important event in our school calendar and in the past, we have donated hundreds of pounds of food and essentials to worthy causes. As we have been unable to celebrate in the usual way, we decided that as a school our focus would be on gathering donations for the Hay and Brecon Foodbank, who provide food to people who are in need of it. The work they do is superb and they are always grateful for the support of the local community. We would like to thank them for their tireless effort to provide support to many many people in our community.
While schools are not yet back to ‘business as usual’, we were able to hold a whole school assembly outside in the autumn sunshine, with classes sat in their bubbles for it. Our Chair of Governors, Reverend Gordon Bingham, held the assembly and said after ‘it was wonderful to see all of the children’s smiling faces together in the sun again!’
We will finish this report with a short prayer, to remind us how lucky we all are!
A Harvest Prayer
Dear God
Thank you for our crops and food,
Thank you for our water and soil,
Thank you for the trees, grass and flowers,
Thank you for our fruit and vegetables,
Thank you for Harvest,
Amen.
