A headteacher has been appointed for a new primary school that will open in Brecon next year.

Sarah Court has been appointed as headteacher for the new primary school in Brecon, following an extensive recruitment process overseen by the school’s Temporary Governing Body.

The new school will open in September 2024 following the merger of Mount Street Infants School, Mount Street Junior School and Cradoc C.P. School.

The merger is part of the "Transforming Education" plans by Powys County Council.

Mrs Court, who lives near Brecon, started her teaching career 30 years ago. During her time, she developed her teaching and leadership skills through a variety of teaching, senior leadership and advisory roles in the UK and around the world.  Mrs Court spent several years working for Service Children’s Education for the British Armed Forces in Germany.

Mrs Court currently leads the council’s Vulnerable Groups Team, supporting schools, pupils and families from minority ethnic and Armed Forces backgrounds.

Jess Williams, Chair of the Temporary Governing Body, said: “We are delighted to have appointed Sarah as the Headteacher and look forward to working with her as we transition to the new school.”

Commenting on her appointment, Mrs Court said: “I’m honoured to be appointed as the Headteacher for this new school in Brecon. I look forward to getting to know pupils, staff and parents and building new relationships as we work together to deliver the opportunities for all pupils.”

Cllr Pete Roberts, Cabinet Member for a Learning Powys, said: “I would like to congratulate Sarah on her appointment as Headteacher for the new school in Brecon. I look forward to working with her as we work together to improve outcomes for our learners. I wish her all the best.”

The new school will operate on the three existing sites before moving to a brand-new building in Brecon.
