Dozens of schools across Powys are to close or partially close on Thursday as extreme heat continues to affect Wales and parts of the UK.

A red weather warning for extreme heat in southern areas of the country has been extended until the end of Thursday, with an amber warning covering Wales and much of England.

The Met Office has warned temperatures could reach 38C to 40C in some locations, bringing disruption to schools and public services.

A number of schools in Powys were closed on Wednesday, with more announcing closures for Thursday.

The schools currently closed tomorrow (Thursday) are: Abermule C.P. School, Archdeacon Griffiths C. in W. (A) School, Brecon High School, Brynllywarch Hall School, Builth Wells C.P. School, Clyro C. in W. School, Crickhowell High School, Gwernyfed High School, Llanfaes C.P. School, Llanidloes High School, Montgomery C. in W. School, Newtown High School - John Beddoes Campus, Newtown High School - Newtown Campus, Priory C. in W. School, PRU - Mid/South, PRU - North, Sennybridge C.P. School, Welshpool CinW Primary School, Welshpool High School, Ysgol Bro Hyddgen, Ysgol Bro Tawe, Ysgol Calon Cymru - Builth Campus, Ysgol Calon Cymru - Llandrindod Campus, Ysgol Cefnllys, Ysgol Golwg Pen-y-Fan (all three campuses), Ysgol Golwg y Cwm, Ysgol Gymraeg Dyffryn y Glowyr, Ysgol Maesydderwen, Ysgol Penmaes, Ysgol Rhiw Bechan, Ysgol Robert Owen, Ysgol Trefonnen C. in W. Community Primary, Ysgol y Mynydd Du, and Ysgol-y-Bannau.

Berriew C.P. School, Crickhowell C.P. School, Guilsfield C.P. School, Hay-on-Wye C.P. School, Leighton C.P. School, Llanelwedd C. in W. School, Llangattock C. in W. School, Llangors C. in W. School, Llangynidr C.P. School, Ysgol Gymraeg y Trallwng, and Ysgol Rhiw Bechan will be open in the morning but be closed in afternoon.

Further school closures or partial openings are expected to be confirmed as the heat warning continues.
