Some schools in Powys are set to close on Wednesday and Thursday as extreme temperatures grip the county, despite earlier assurances that there were no planned closures.

Ysgol Maesydderwen in Ystradgynlais, Ysgol Penmaes in Brecon, Brynllywarch Hall School near Kerry, Ysgol Golwg y Cwm in Ystradgynlais, and Ysgol Gymraeg Dyffryn y Glowyr in Cwm-twrch Isaf are all listed as closed due to "adverse weather" on Powys County Council’s school closures webpage for Wednesday (June 24).

Ysgol Bro Tawe in Ystradgynlais is listed as an afternoon closure tomorrow.

Ysgol Maesydderwen, Ysgol Penmaes, Ysgol Golwg y Cwm and Ysgol Gymraeg Dyffryn y Glowyr are also listed under “school closures on or after June 25”, indicating they are also closed on Thursday.

Earlier on Tuesday, Powys County Council told the B&R there were "no planned school closures" despite a Met Office red heat warning covering parts of south Powys.

The warning is in force from 9am on Wednesday until 9pm on Thursday, with temperatures forecast to potentially reach 38C to 40C in some areas. A wider amber heat warning covers the whole of Wales and much of England.

In its earlier statement, the council said schools had been advised to prioritise the health, safety and wellbeing of learners and staff, including reducing outdoor activities, promoting hydration and maximising ventilation and shade.

The B&R has contacted the council for clarification on the latest closures.
