A long-running community group has come to an end after more than 50 years of fundraising in the local area.

Black Mountains Lions Club has closed due to a lack of active members, bringing to a close 53 years of work supporting local causes.

Before winding up, members held a charity evening at Baskerville Hall Hotel in Clyro, where the club’s remaining funds were shared out between 25 organisations.

Around 70 people attended, including representatives from the charities as well as past and present Lions members.

Donations went to groups including Hay & District Dial-a-Ride, Hay Swimming Pool, Wales Air Ambulance and Longtown Mountain Rescue Team, along with a range of other local causes.

Members said they were proud of what the club had achieved since it was formed, raising and donating several hundred thousand pounds over the years.

Fundraising efforts included Hay Festival parking, Christmas and Easter draws, and stalls at local fetes. The club also organised community events such as the popular Hay to Clyro Christmas Walks and annual firework displays.

Over the decades, the group supported a wide range of projects. These included major contributions towards three minibuses for Hay Dial-a-Ride, a sun lounge for Cartref Care Home, computers for the former Hay Primary School, and a Guide hut at Hay School.

The club also funded 11 defibrillators across the area, alongside many other donations both large and small.

Members would like to thank the local community for their generous support over the years.
