After more than 32 years in business, Young’s of Brecon will close its doors for the final time this coming Saturday (May 30).
The long-established family business was opened by Iain and Dawn McIntosh on April 18 1994, initially trading as 'The Carpet Shop' in Brecon, before changing the name to Young's of Brecon in 1996. It has since become one of the best known independent carpet and flooring businesses in the area, serving domestic and commercial customers across Brecon, Mid Wales and much of South Wales.
Over the years, Young’s of Brecon supplied and fitted flooring for thousands of homes, as well as carrying out work for organisations including the NHS, Ministry of Defence, Police, Fire Authority, builders, commercial businesses and public sector organisations throughout the region.
Reflecting on the decision to close the business, Iain and Dawn said: “After more than three decades, we have made the very difficult decision to close Young’s of Brecon for Iain to be able to fully commit to his new Senedd Member role.
“When we first opened our doors in April 1994, we could never have imagined the support and loyalty we would receive from customers over the years. We have had the privilege of serving several generations of local families, along with businesses and organisations across South Wales, and we are incredibly grateful to every single person who chose to support us.
“Running a small independent business has never been easy, particularly in recent years, but we always tried to offer honest advice, reliable service, competitive pricing and a personal touch that only a local family business can provide.
“We would like to sincerely thank all of our customers, staff, fitters, suppliers, friends and family who helped make Young’s of Brecon what it became.”

Before opening the family business, Iain worked for Harleys in Brecon for almost eight years, meaning he has spent close to 40 years working in the flooring trade.
Speaking about his career, Iain added: “When I look back, it’s quite incredible to think I’ve spent around 40 years on my hands and knees fitting carpets and flooring, dealing with customers, fitting window blinds and serving the public. It has been hard work, but also very rewarding, and I’ve met some wonderful people over the years.
“The experience of running a small business has taught me a huge amount about the pressures facing working people, employers and high streets. I intend to take that knowledge and understanding with me into my new role representing constituents.”
The couple have also confirmed that one of Young’s of Brecon’s experienced floor layers, Tom Griffiths, will continue operating a carpet and flooring business from the same premises.
Tom said: “I would like to thank Iain and Dawn for this opportunity and for allowing me to work with them over the last two and a half years. I wish Iain all the very best in his new role. It has been a pleasure meeting so many wonderful customers, and I hope to keep in touch with many of you for years to come. I am also very excited to be following in my parents’ footsteps by owning my own flooring shop. I would like to welcome everyone to our 'The Flooring Co' opening day on June 13 - even if it’s just to pop in and say hello!”
