Race Across the County – Brecknock took place on Sunday, 10 May, with teams of two travelling across the county in glorious weather and enjoying spectacular views of Brecknock along the way. Competitors raced between checkpoints using a range of transport options, with the day finishing with a lively social at Builth Wells Bowling Club.

In total, 43 teams started and finished the course.

The winners were The Unbenchables — Kirsty Prosser and Ffion Bufton-Matthews — who completed the 84.3-mile challenge in an outstanding time of 3 hours 15 minutes. Second place, just six minutes behind, went to father-and-daughter team Andrew and Megan Morgan. The Best Mode of Transport award went to Delyth Prosser and her partner, Nicola Williams.

The event started at Brecon Rugby Club, and organisers have said they would like to thank the club for its hospitality in hosting the start of the race.

After leaving Brecon, teams headed for early checkpoints including the Usk & Railway, Sennybridge and Storey Arms Education Centre, before continuing across the county through a wide range of community venues and local businesses.

Checkpoints and venues included: Libanus Mountain Centre; Glanusk Service Station; Sennybridge; The Tai’r Bull (Libanus); Llanfaes Dairy; The Castle Hotel (Brecon); The Clarence Inn; The Bear Hotel (Crickhowell); Gwernyfed Rugby Club; The Honey Café (Bronllys); The Griffin (Llyswen); The Wheelwright Arms (Erwood); The Fountain Inn (Builth Wells); The Prince Llywelyn (Cilmery); and the Golf Club (Builth Wells), before finishing at Builth Wells Bowling Club, where everyone enjoyed refreshments.

Organisers would like to thank everyone who helped steward the event, supported teams along the route, and helped at the finish — including volunteers supporting the bar and food at Builth Wells Bowling Club. Special thanks were also given to Anne Davies and Jan Healey for the idea and meticulous planning, alongside their wider team: Shelley, Kelly, Jennifer and Gwyneth.

Organisers would like to thank all those who donated money and refreshments for the teams, and everyone who supported the race through sponsorship. Special thanks go to David Chadwick MP and J & A Glamping for their sponsorship, and to Tesco (Llandrindod Wells), Co-op (Builth Wells) and Morrisons (Brecon) for generous donations of fruit, snacks and water to keep teams fuelled and hydrated.

Event President Mr Gethin Havard said: “I was simply in awe of the fun and excitement generated by the Race Across Brecknock, involving several modes of transport and culminating with a fantastic social at Builth Wells Bowling Club. Brecknock is buzzing!

Jan Healey proposed a vote of thanks, recognising the many people who stewarded the event, the teams for competing, and all the helpers at the bowling club. She also gave a special mention to Rhianwen Jones for her social media coverage and promoting this event.

Teams reported an “awesome day” that was “very well organised”, and praised the kindness of people they met along the way — with lifts offered by drivers in cars, camper vans and even a tractor, as well as a Polish lorry driver en route to Aberystwyth and visitors from as far afield as New Zealand, Nepal, Bath, London and Chester.
