Two of Powys’ museums have achieved national accreditation recognising the standards of their work.

Radnorshire Museum in Llandrindod Wells and y Gaer Museum and Art Gallery in Brecon have both gained Museum Accreditation, the national quality standard for museums across the UK.

The accreditation recognises standards in areas including museum management, collections care, learning and public engagement.

y Gaer, based in Brecon’s historic Shire Hall, houses collections covering the history, archaeology, art and natural heritage of Brecknockshire.

Radnorshire Museum cares for collections telling the story of the county’s people, places and traditions.

The accreditation could also help both museums secure grants, develop partnerships and borrow objects from other collections across the UK, helping to bring even more exciting exhibitions and activities to local communities.

Reacting to the accreditation, Councillor Raiff Devlin, Powys County Council’s cabinet member for customers, digital and community services, said the achievement was “wonderful news for Powys”.

He said accreditation was a “nationally recognised mark of excellence” and reflected the “commitment, expertise and hard work” of museum teams and volunteers.

“Our museums play a vital role in preserving the stories, heritage and identity of our communities while inspiring learning, creativity and pride in place,” he said.

“Accreditation recognises the high standards of care that are being applied to our collections and the outstanding experiences being offered to visitors.”

Radnorshire Museum is currently closed to the public until September 25 while minor refurbishment work is carried out.

There may also be a further short closure of the museum and Llandrindod Wells Library coming up in November.
