Llanfaes Primary School has been praised by inspectors for its “caring ethos” and the “exemplary behaviour” of its pupils, following a recent visit from Estyn.
The glowing report, which was published at the end of May after the inspection took place in March, highlights the school’s strong leadership, supportive staff, and commitment to pupil wellbeing.
Inspectors described the school as a place where pupils “feel safe, respected and thrive”, with staff and pupils sharing warm, positive relationships that support learning and behaviour across the school.
“The positive working relationships that staff foster with pupils are a notable feature of the school,” the report says.
“Staff display a calm and consistent approach to managing behaviour.”
But it was the school’s work with its youngest pupils that was singled out for particular praise.
In a spotlight section of the report, Estyn commended Llanfaes for creating a learning environment that “inspires independence and curiosity” among younger children. Staff were praised for adapting activities to reflect pupils’ interests, making timely, thoughtful interventions that encourage problem-solving and perseverance.
Inspectors also praised the school’s focus on developing an understanding of “Welsh identity and their knowledge of Brecon”.
The report noted that pupils are encouraged to reflect on their own learning, plan whole-school events and take on leadership roles, including those with additional learning needs.
Headteacher, Mrs Karen Lawrence, said: “As a whole school community, we are extremely pleased with the recent report. It reflects the pride, dedication and collective effort that are so clearly evident at Llanfaes. It is truly a team effort. This achievement belongs to everyone - past and present children, staff, parents and governors.
“Each has played a vital role in maintaining our high standards and in our ongoing pursuit of excellence. Together, we have created an environment where children are happy, supported and able to thrive.”
The Chair of Governors, Mrs Jackie Williams, said: “Estyn has shown how committed and dedicated everyone involved with Llanfaes School is for all children, giving them positive experiences and lasting memories.
“I’d like to thank Mrs Karen Lawrence, all staff, governors and parents for their continued hard work and support. Without us all working together, a spotlight and place where children are thriving would not have been achievable. That is excellence, and I am very proud to be part of a school where pupils are happy, caring, safe and enjoy their learning.”
Cllr Pete Roberts, Cabinet Member for a Learning Powys, said: “On behalf of Powys County Council, I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to everyone at Llanfaes C.P. School on this outstanding Estyn report.
“This achievement reflects the school’s strong and compassionate leadership, the dedication of its staff, and a shared commitment to creating an environment where pupils are inspired to thrive. The emphasis on nurturing independence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning is clearly making a meaningful difference.
“Thank you to the entire school community for your continued pursuit of excellence and for setting such a high standard for education in Powys.”
