Brecon and Radnorshire MP Fay Jones is pushing the UK Government to fund the ambitious redevelopment of the Victorian school in Talgarth.

Ms Jones has joined the campaign led by Black Mountains College to redevelop the former Talgarth Primary School site, which was built in 1875.  The college aims to use the site for a permanent home while also providing Talgarth and District Regeneration Group and Talgarth Town Council with a brand new community asset. The College has already raised £350,000 towards the restoration but is bidding to the UK Government for a further £1.7million from the Community Ownership Fund.

After signing off the formal bid in January, Ms Jones last week visited the site along with Chief Executive Ben Rawlence, Talgarth Councillor William Powell and former students/Talgarth grandees Vin Stephens and Bryan George.

Ms Jones has now taken the campaign a step further by meeting with Levelling Up Minister Jacob Young MP.

Speaking after the meeting, Ms Jones said: “After seeing the site for myself, I sought out the Minister to emphasise just how transformational this project could be. It would breathe new life into a building which is a rich part of Talgarth’s history and give the Black Mountains College a superb new home. Although he couldn’t give me any firm commitments, the minister was very positive towards to bid and I’m hopeful we might get some good news soon.

“We have already had huge success with the UK Government’s Community Ownership Fund; The Judge’s Lodgings in Presteigne and The Radnor Arms Hotel in New Radnor have received almost half a million pounds so far. The bid for Talgarth is a very big ask but I’m confident that we can demonstrate just how valuable it would be for Talgarth and the whole community.”
