A footbridge and road have been closed in Ystradgynlais for safety reasons after part of the structure collapsed following Storm Dennis.

Powys County Council have closed Teddy Bear Bridge and the adjacent road after part of the bridge support, which crosses the River Tawe, suffered structural damage caused by high water levels.

Engineers from the council are currently assessing the damage and installing temporary flood defences. Natural Resources Wales and residents have been advised of the incident and safety closure.

Powys County Council highways team have said in a message on social media: “Closure required due to flood defence wall collapsing into the River Tawe, leaving Teddy Bear Bridge perched on an unstable section of the wall.”

Chairman of Ystradgynlais Town Council Wayne Thomas has said that the damaged structure poses a risk if not dealt with quickly and efficiently:

“The foundations of the bridge are all cracked and are falling apart and a third of the road has been taken away. It’s a massive risk because people do access the bridge.

“A structural engineer needs to look at it as a matter of urgency and remove it- there’s a high risk of flooding again this week.”
