Primary school pupils enjoyed a fun and informative day last week during a special visit from a Gurkha regiment.
Year four and five pupils at Cradoc Primary School, near Brecon, spent last Wednesday afternoon (May 18) making traditional Nepalese food and learning about Gurkha culture.
The visit, which was organised by The Royal Regiment of Wales, was to aid pupils with part of their current school topic about understanding diversity within the communities in which we live.
Cpl Teny led the afternoon’s visit, who was supported by Pte Dipesh and Pte Manish. Capt Dave Dimmock and Staff Sgt Dave Hearne were also on hand to answer questions and support the children in their learning.
Throughout the afternoon, the pupils took part in range of activities - including learning how to make momos, which are traditional Nepalese dumplings.
After a demonstration from Pte Dipesh, who showed his impressive dough skills in creating different designs, the children split into groups to make the dough and create the savoury fillings for their momos.

As the momos were being steamed in the kitchen, the team then showed the children some basic knife skills. With the help of adults, the pupils were able to chop up cucumber, tomato and lettuce to create their own side salad.
Once the momos had been cooked, the pupils and teachers then tucked into their delicious creations, with a choice of chutneys to serve.

Darcy, one of the pupils involved, said: “I loved making the momos and molding them into shapes - my favourite design was the flower.
Kaiden added: “I liked rolling the dough and mixing the ingredients - it was really fun I’ve never had momos before.”
Youngster Lizzy also said that she liked learning about the Gurkha traditions and the different clothing that Nepalese people wear.
Speaking to the children, Capt Dimmock said: “It’s so important to learn about other different cultures - and this is what today has been all about.
“It’s been great to learn together so thank you for all taking part.”
