A community transport charity in Hay-on-Wye is launching a new pilot scheme next month to help residents who need extra support with their weekly shop.
Hay & District Dial-a-Ride will introduce its “Shopping Buddies” initiative in April, running on Tuesday mornings in Hay until March 31, 2027.
The assisted shopping service will pair Dial-a-Ride members with a trained volunteer passenger assistant who accompanies them in store, offering practical help such as reaching items, finding products and checking labels.
The scheme is aimed at people who may feel less confident shopping independently but still want to maintain their choice and independence.
Lesley Johnston, CEO of Hay & District Dial-a-Ride, said: “For many people, shopping is about much more than groceries. It’s about independence, social contact and feeling confident in your own community.
“Our Shopping Buddies pilot will provide that extra helping hand in store, giving reassurance and practical support so that members can shop with confidence.”
The service is available to Dial-a-Ride members, with normal fares applying. There is no additional charge for the in-store support provided by the volunteer.
The pilot has been made possible thanks to funding from the Social Value Fund, which will allow the charity to trial the scheme and assess demand locally.
Hay & District Dial-a-Ride has supported residents in Hay and the surrounding area for many years, providing accessible transport and helping people stay connected. The organisation says the new initiative builds on its ethos of being “more than a lift”.
