Hay & District Dial-a-Ride has received a boost to its long-running Hardship Scheme thanks to new funding from Powys County Councillors.

The support, provided through the Social Value Fund’s Poverty Alleviation Scheme, will help residents struggling with transport costs continue accessing essential services.

The Hardship Scheme, which has been operating since 2018, offers confidential financial assistance to members who find it difficult to pay fares or annual membership. The funding will ensure residents can continue making vital journeys, including medical appointments, shopping trips, and social visits.

The funding has been provided by councillors Will Lloyd, William Powell, Tom Colbert, and Gareth Ratcliffe.

Liz Hughes, Trustee and Lead for the Hardship Scheme, said: “We’re so grateful to our county councillors for recognising the importance of community transport in tackling social isolation and financial hardship. This funding means we can continue to help members stay mobile, independent, and connected when times are tough.”

Cllr Will Lloyd said: “Hay & District Dial-a-Ride is a vital service not just for Hay-on-Wye, but for the wider Hay and Talgarth area including surrounding villages. In rural communities like ours, access to transport can be the difference between isolation and independence. I’m proud to support the Hardship Scheme through the Anti-Poverty Locality Fund, and I’d like to thank my neighbouring county councillors for working together on this important lifeline.”

Cllr Gareth Ratcliffe added: “I’m really pleased that we’ve been able to come together to support such an amazing organisation. They provide such vital opportunities for residents to connect, helping to prevent social isolation and delivering a wide range of services that are deeply valued across our community.

The Hardship Scheme is open to existing members and is managed confidentially through the charity’s office. For more information, residents can contact Hay & District Dial-a-Ride on 01497 821616.
