MORE than £1,000 has been raised towards the Welsh National Mining Memorial by re-staging a century old rugby fixture in Brecon.
The town's independent school Christ College took on Crickhowell Rugby Club's Youth team to support the memorial, which is due to be unveiled in Senghenydd, near Caerphilly, next month on the anniversary of the UK's worst pit disaster.
The teams played each other in 1913 in a fundraiser for the victims of that October's Universal Colliery explosion in Senghenydd which claimed the lives of 440 miners.
Christ College ran out 28-5 winners while the school said at least £1,400, with further donations to come, had been raised for the mining memorial.
