A Brecon carriage driver has been nominated for a prestigious national award.

Emily Ham is one of just four people nationally to be nominated for the Horse and Hound Magazine Awards.

Emily competed in the Para Driving World Championships in August. She gained fourth place individually and was a key contributor to the bronze medal achieved by the five-person Great Britain team.

Emily is now up for the Inspiration of the Year category at the Horse and Hound Awards.

Emily recently returned to competitive driving after a six-year break due to health issues. She previously represented Wales four times internationally on the British Young Drivers Squad and went to the European Young Drivers Championships as a member of Team GB.

Emily has also been five times British Young Driver Champion.

This year, Emily was the first Welsh disabled carriage driver to be named in Team GB’s five-person Para driver squad.

The winners of the Horse and Hound Awards are decided by public vote.

Voting closes at the end of the day tomorrow (Thursday, October 26).

“This year has been absolutely amazing,” said Emily.

“Horses have always been the centre of my life and just being around them makes me so happy - they have been the best medicine.

“While I can no longer drive using traditional rein handling for showing, over the past year I’ve been supported to adapt to my disability and now use looped reins, a whip loop and a lap strap to help me.”

There will be an awards ceremony for all the nominees across the different categories and the winners will be announced on the night.

Emily is taking her dad as her guest in recognition of all the hours he has spent driving her and the horse trailer hundreds of miles to training and events, as well as the four days of travelling to the Netherlands, and back for the recent World Championships.
