James Evans has asked the Welsh Government what financial support it can give rugby clubs to help them become community hubs.

Sporting his Gwernyfed RFC tie, the Brecon and Radnorshire MS asked at the Senedd what the Government is doing to support grassroots rugby.

He said the Welsh Rugby Union has unveiled its new community investment model - a significant cultural shift designed not just to reward on-field success but also to champion clubs' off-field work, including governance, community engagement, volunteer development, facility improvement and inclusive practices.

Mr Evans told First Minister, Eluned Morgan: “It's very interesting - the money that the UK Government is putting into this scheme - and I know the Minister for Sport has also put money into the Football Association of Wales.

“I'm interested in how much more money the Welsh Government can put into the WRU to make sure that rugby clubs can become community hubs in our communities.

“They do an awful lot more than just producing fine rugby players of the future.

“They do an a great job as well of helping communities to be more resilient, bringing people together and helping people get fit and healthier to address the obesity crisis that this country is facing.”

Ms Morgan said the Government recognises how important rugby is in Wales and has given substantial sums to clubs via Sports Wales.

She told Mr Evans: “That has helped to improve club facilities, including those in Brecon and Builth Wells, and encourages people to become more active.

“Some of this money will be spent via the WRU to drive the club investment model that they're promoting.

“The WRU will receive £434,000 - that's just in South Wales - via the new club investment model. That’s good news because you're right - these are great facilities.

“They can reach into communities in a way that many other organisations can't.

“It’s important that clubs work closer with their communities to provide that welcoming and inclusive environment and that they are ready to serve the changing demographics of Wales.”

Ms Morgan said that if they manage to do that, they should be rewarded more.
