A professional flamenco dancer who grew up in Brecon is bringing her critically acclaimed full-length show to her hometown this autumn.
Josie Sinnadurai, who is now based in Seville, Spain, will perform “Flamenco Orígenes” at Theatr Brycheiniog on Sunday, September 21.
The show traces the cultural roots of flamenco across continents and centuries, blending high-energy dance with live Spanish music. Ms Sinnadurai co-choreographed the production with Madrid-born flamenco artist Lourdes Fernández, and the two share the stage in a powerful duet accompanied by a four-piece band led by Barcelona native and flamenco virtuoso guitarist Adrián Solá.
For Ms Sinnadurai, returning to Brecon is both a personal and professional milestone. She first performed a flamenco solo at Theatr Brycheiniog aged just eight, and went on to appear regularly in Westenders’ annual pantomimes, Brecon High School productions, and the Mid Wales Dance Academy's end-of-year showcases. More recently, she danced as a soloist in Brecon Festival Ballet’s production of “The Nutcracker”.
“Flamenco Orígenes“ highlights flamenco’s diverse influences, from the Guajiras with roots in Cuba, to the Arabic Zambra, and the Argentine Milonga. It celebrates how flamenco evolved through a blend of musical traditions that crossed trade routes and continents before becoming the iconic art form of Andalusia.
Audiences can expect electrifying footwork, soaring vocals, live percussion, and moments of lyrical reflection as the ensemble unpacks the global story of flamenco.
Ms Sinnadurai trained in flamenco at top schools in Madrid, Seville, and Jerez, and also holds a BA and MA in contemporary dance from London Contemporary Dance School. She now performs regularly at major flamenco venues in Seville and works as a producer and dancer with the contemporary company Sweetshop Revolution.
The show has been touring in the UK and Spain, gaining praise for its energy, storytelling, and musicianship.
Tickets for the Brecon performance of “Flamenco Orígenes” on Sunday, September 21 (5pm) are available now from the Theatr Brycheiniog website or via the box office on 01874 611622.
