Llandrindod’s Labour party branch has been helping to gather signatures for a petition to save the town’s high school.

Powys County Council wants to close the school, along with the high school in Builth Wells, and build a new one but governors want to keep education in its current locations - but run as a single school. They launched a petition to build up support among the town’s residents .

"Alex Thomas, our candidate in the upcoming Assembly elections, had the idea," said Mike Sivier, Labour’s Llandrindod branch secretary.

"He offered to take the petition to people’s doorsteps the next time we were out in Llandod, and we ended up with close to 100 signatures.

"The school’s plan would keep education in Llandrindod, meaning we would not lose a valuable community hub, and the town would remain attractive for businesses considering relocating to rural Wales - entrepreneurs would be able to send their children to the local school. These are important priorities for the county town of Powys.

"They are also important priorities for Labour. We live here too, and we will fight for our community.

"And the response was terrific. Everybody who spoke to me was delighted to support the High School and oppose the ill-thought out and disjointed ideas of Powys County Council, whose cabinet consists mostly of members from Montgomeryshire.

"They might not care about Llandrindod, but we do - and we hope the weight of public opinion, and the quality of the alternative plan, can change their minds."
