THE only bank in Britain’s smallest town has closed its doors for the final time.

Barclays said it was closing its branch in Llanwrtyd Wells due to declining customer numbers.

Local residents opposed to the closure gathered at the bank, before it closed early at midday on Friday, to close their accounts, release black balloons and sing a protest song.

However town mayor Peter James took time out from the protest to make a presentation to Pat Lewis who has worked at the branch for the past 26 years.

Pat closed the doors of the branch for the final time and also retired from the banking industry after 53 years.

Barclays has said the cash machine will remain at the current bank and it is also considering alternative locations in the town.

Campaigners said Barclays had put profit ahead of providing a service to the local community and their nearest bank will now be 12 miles away.
