CHILDREN across Powys got into the spirit of St David’s Day on Wednesday with lots of activities at school such as making Welsh cakes and crafting their own Welsh dragons.

Many also wore the Welsh national costume to school or Welsh rugby jerseys.

It came as the Liberal Democrats reiterated calls for St David’s Day to be made a national holiday in Wales.

Welsh Lib Dem leader Mark Williams has long argued Wales should be given parity with Scotland in being able to designate its own public holidays.

The Ceredigion MP said: "Wales is a proud nation with much to offer, and St David’s Day is a time for us to celebrate all that is great about Wales, from our rich history and culture, to our entrepreneurial spirit.

"We have made repeated efforts to devolve the necessary powers to the Welsh Assembly to designate public holidays in Wales, and we continue to make those same demands today.

"A decade has passed since Scotland made St Andrew’s Day a public holiday, and it is time that Wales was given the same power."
