Libanus Show lights up bank holiday weekend!

A wet morning did not deter competitors, stewards or judges. The sun did come out occasionally to shine on some superb livestock in the show rings, spirits were not dampened and an outstanding display in the shed matched the livestock.

The Show’s cookery judge had a huge job – judging 11 bara briths is enough of a challenge before adding all the other entries across cordials, jams, wine, cakes and savouries. Sarah Brooks and Eileen Jones shared the cups in the Cookery and Craft sections. The entries in the Children’s section were exceptional with amazing sheep scarecrows, fabulous paintings, fantastic castles and gardens on a plate. Cups in the Children’s section were shared by Darcie, Jacob and Evan. Despite the weather over the summer the vegetables and flowers did not disappoint, with a beautiful display of colour.

Out on the field it was wonderful to see so many new competitors taking part, whether showing sheep, dogs or ponies. It was really encouraging to meet so many taking part for the first time – whether they were 5 or 55 years old. The judges must be congratulated across the board for the time and effort they put in, and the encouragement, experience and coaching they generously share with competitors.

On the sheepdog trials field there was fierce competition with over 100 dogs and handlers taking part. The Open National was won by Misena Dubenova, with Merion Jones taking the honours in the South Wales style. The competitors included International champions and handlers taking to the field for the first time. With the combination of weather, sheep, dogs and handlers it was a real challenge whether stepping up to the peg for the first time or with years of experience behind the handler.

The show acts as a hub where neighbours reconnect, newcomers are warmly welcomed, friendships are made and knowledge is shared. Our Presidents this year, Mr & Mrs Huw Havard, are long term supporters of this show and many other aspects of community across the county; their commitment to community and rural life is deep rooted and clearly demonstrated and it has been our privilege to have them as Presidents.
