THE Pavilion in Llandrindod Wells could once again hold arts performances and events if a new group can re-open the attraction.

Powys County Council closed the 110-year-old building in June last year after the independent cabinet decided it would no longer support the loss making establishment.

The building was put up for sale after an extensive marketing campaign failed to find a new operator.

However a newly formed community interest community, Grand Pavilions Ltd, has approached the council and asked to take on the building, including its car park.

The council’s cabinet is being recommended to agree to a transfer of the building and car park when it meets on Tuesday, January 26.

Cabinet member responsible for property, Councillor Darren Mayor said: "The council was actively considering disposing of the building by auction at a national sale but was contacted by a new community group with plans to re-open the facility as key local venue for the performing arts and a community centre.

"The new group Grand Pavilions Ltd, is a community interest company supported by the Llandrindod Wells and Area Chamber of trade, who propose reopening the pavilion and operate it for the benefit of the local community with various events including live theatre, dances, displays exhibitions, cinema and indoor market.

"They also have plans for room hire, office space hire and have plans for letting the Undercroft. They have also requested that the car park to the front of the building be included to enable them to create a private car park, but with a provisional undertaking to provide free parking for Sundays, weddings and funerals at the church.

"The cabinet is being recommended to accept the group’s expression of interest and re-establish the Pavilion as a key local venue for performing arts and a community centre. If successful, the Pavilion will once again become a community asset managed by a community organisation with little risk to the council, but helping to bring long term soc ial and economic benefits to Llandrindod Wells and the surrounding area.

"If approved the building, including the car parking area to the front of the property, will be transferred to Grand Pavilion Events Ltd under a 30 year lease but will include suitable break clauses to protect public interests if necessary," he added.
