Llanwrtyd Wells has won a prestigious gold award in the Royal Horticultural Society's Britain in Bloom competition, following a year of work by volunteers to celebrate the town's heritage and improve its public spaces.
The town was a first-time finalist in the 2026 competition, representing Wales in its category as one of 10 national entries.

The Llanwrtyd in Bloom team began fundraising, designing floral displays, growing seedlings and planting in January.
Volunteers also helped clean, paint and repair areas around the town, with regular 'Sort it Saturdays' bringing the community together.
Judges visited in July to assess the town's horticulture, environmental work and community involvement.
They left saying: "You have something special in Llanwrtyd."

At the awards ceremony in Rochdale, Georgie Perrett, Lynn Ball, Dave Barlow and Pam Barlow were delighted to collect the gold award.
The team also received a special ‘Highlights’ certificate from the judges, recognising the horticulture, community spirit and heritage of Llanwrtyd Wells.

The judges' final report said: "A Britain in Bloom entry ably led by Georgie Perrett and Lynn Ball has brought this lovely Welsh village together to produce a rich diversity of horticultural and environmental delights."
It added that the gold awards across horticulture, environment and community, and the overall gold award, were "very well deserved".
The Llanwrtyd in Bloom team said: "We are so proud of our community!"
The Royal Horticultural Society's (RHS) Britain in Bloom is the UK's largest horticultural campaign and community gardening competition. Launched in 1964, it encourages communities to improve their local areas through planting, gardening and environmental projects.
