After a joint effort between two mountain rescue teams - Central and Western Beacons - and other emergency services, the man was safely packaged to prevent further injury before being winched into a rescue helicopter.

The man was taken to University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff for further treatment.

A spoksperson for the Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team said: “Our 100th callout this year was to assist our Western Beacons Mountain Rescue Team colleagues with a male who’d jumped off Sgwd Gwladus waterfall near Pontneddfechan and suffered suspected broken legs with possible spinal injuries.

“Another occasion of terrific joint working with Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service - EMRTS Wales Wales Air Ambulance and Maritime and Coastguard Agency Rescue187 #StAthan, we packaged the male into a vacuum mattress for full body immobilisation, placed him in a stretcher, then winched aboard the rescue helicopter and flown to University Hospital Cardiff.

“We wish the gentlemen a full and speedy recovery.”

On Sunday afternoon, less than 24 hours later, Western Beacons Mountain Rescue Team responded to a further call of someone who had jumped off the same waterfall and injured themselves.

A spoksperson for the team said: “Mountain rescue has responded to eight calls in the last ten days in the waterfalls area.

“We are urging everyone who is enjoying the area to act responsibly and not to risk serious injury by jumping off the falls.”
