A high risk missing woman has been found after she “washed up on an island of rocks” in a river yesterday evening.

Police waded through the water to the woman, who was passing in and out of consciousness, in the river Wye.

Officers stayed with the woman, who was hypothermic, until a fire and rescue service boat crew and ambulance arrived at the scene near Hay-on-Wye.

Brecon Roads Policing unit tweeted about the incident last night. The tweet said: “High risk missing person located by 851 having washed up on an island of rocks in the river Wye.”

The tweet also said it was a fire crew from Talgarth who assisted with the rescue.

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokeswoman said: “Police received a call just before 8.30pm on Wednesday, January 8 reporting a missing person in the Hay-on-Wye area.

“A search was immediately commended with the missing person being found just before 9pm on a small island in the river Wye and the person was taken to hospital by the Welsh Ambulance Service.”

The woman was conveyed by a road ambulance to Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny just after 9.10pm.
