A Hay-on-Wye spot used regularly for free parking has now turned into a long stay pay and display.

The Motte and Bailey car park on the old cattle market site, off Swan Bank, now has a pay and display machine, powered by solar panels.

Up to two hours will cost £2.50, four hours £3.25, and over four hours costing £4.00. There is no charge past 6pm. Disabled parking remains free.

The charge has been implemented by Powys County Council, with an announcement on Powys County Council’s Highways, Transport and Recycling Service Facebook page.

Discussions of a payment plan were recently reported on in November 2024. It is believed the site could generate an extra £6,500 a year for Powys County Council.

Those in the area have shared their concerns, saying that those working in the area will now have lost free parking, while another said it was ‘another town killing machine’. Others have said it is a ‘sad day for locals’.
