Mountain rescuers were called to Peny y Fan to help a woman who was suffering a serious medical episode.

Brecon Mountain Rescue Team attended the woman, who had been out hiking, last Wednesday, September 29.

The team of volunteers were joined by Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team, and Wales Air Ambulance Charity. The woman was treated at the scene to be stabilised before being stretchered off to an awaiting Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust Ambulance.

The air ambulance was unable to land due to the rough terrain, therefore medics were dropped off to assist with the incident. Brecon Mountain Rescue Team were contacted by passing hikers who noticed the casualty in a lot of discomfort.

A team spokesperson has thanked the passing hikers for their contribution to the situation.

They said: “Many thanks to the passing hikers who were medically trained who assisted also. We wish the lady a swift recovery.”

The team also attended the Autumn Food Fayre this weekend at the Royal Welsh Showground.

Members of the Brecon Mountain Rescue Team engaged with the public and discussed mountain safety, with some purchasing their team merchandise at the Food Fayre, that took place on Saturday and Sunday.

"Thanks to all who visited our stall to have a chat. We have missed our role in engaging with members of the public during the Coronavirus Pandemic," said a team spokesperson who attended the fayre and spoke to people about the importance of mountain safety.

The volunteer-led team responds to around 100 callouts a year - an average callout costs the team an average of £550 meaning that the annual running cost is approximately £55,000.

The volunteers, who attend callouts 365 days a year and in all weathers, cannot be contacted directly but are requested by police. The group’s teams are made up of a range of people from mountain lovers with years of experience to medical professionals like doctors and nurses.

The team relies on fundraising from the public to assist with its running costs such as fuel, equipment and vehicle upkeep - especially after the last 18 months as they have not been able to host their usual fundraising events.
