Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe MP David Chadwick has called for the direct bus service between Mid Wales and Cardiff to be reinstated, arguing that recent changes have made journeys to the Welsh capital more difficult for passengers.
Speaking during a Westminster debate on transport links for small towns, the Welsh Liberal Democrat MP criticised changes to the T4 service introduced by Transport for Wales in September last year.
The route previously ran directly from Newtown through Mid Wales and Brecon to Cardiff. However, it now terminates in Merthyr Tydfil, requiring passengers travelling to Cardiff to change onto the X4 service.
Mr Chadwick told MPs that the change was causing difficulties for residents across his constituency.
"Cardiff is the major destination on the route," he said.
"It is where people travel for specialist NHS appointments, university and college education, employment opportunities, access to national institutions or simply a day shopping.
"For many residents across Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe, a reliable public transport connection to the Welsh capital is essential."
He argued that the need to change buses in Merthyr Tydfil particularly affected older and disabled passengers, as well as those travelling with luggage.
The MP also raised concerns about connections between the T4 and X4 services, claiming the timetables are poorly integrated and can leave passengers facing long waits.
"What was once the only direct connection between mid-Wales and our capital, Cardiff, now requires passengers to change in Merthyr Tydfil," he said.
"Those changes to the T4 service may look minor on a map but, for those who rely on public transport, it has made travelling to Cardiff significantly more difficult."
Mr Chadwick said the direct service should be restored, adding that “rural communities should not be expected to accept a reduced service while being told it represents progress.”
