This month, Parliament voted on a Liberal Democrat proposal for a new UK-EU customs union: a practical step towards repairing the economic damage caused by Brexit. Shamefully, both Labour and the Conservatives voted against it.

For years, people in Mid Wales were promised that Brexit would lower costs, cut bureaucracy and strengthen Britain's economy. Those promises have proven false. And families and businesses are still paying the price every single day through higher food bills, rising energy costs and growing burdens on local firms.

Businesses that once traded easily with Europe are now drowning in paperwork and delays. Small exporters have been hit hard. And our farmers face relentless pressure from trade barriers that make it harder to sell high-quality Welsh produce abroad, undermining livelihoods that took generations to build.

Nigel Farage and others who championed Brexit promised a stronger, more prosperous Britain. What they delivered was weaker growth, falling trade and years of economic instability. Now Farage and Badenoch are cheering on Donald Trump, whose reckless approach to global affairs has driven up energy prices and made working people across Britain worse off.

At a time when global instability is rising and Russia continues its aggression in Europe, Britain should be deepening ties with its European allies, not building more barriers between ourselves and our largest trading partners.

That is why the Liberal Democrats are calling for a new customs union alongside a stronger defence and economic partnership with Europe. It would cut red tape, support businesses, strengthen supply chains and bring down costs for families across Mid Wales.

After years of broken promises and economic damage, it is time to be honest: this deal is not working. Britain must stop defending the indefensible and start rebuilding our relationship with our closest allies. The people of Mid Wales deserve better.
