Brecon Dial-A-Ride has upgraded its fleet after securing funding for two replacement wheelchair-accessible minibuses.
The vehicles were purchased with help from a $50,000 (approximately £36,500) donation from an anonymous supporter with links to Brecon. It was also supported by the Percy Davies Trust, towards a replacement bus to cover the Crickhowell Dial-A-Ride area.
A volunteer from the club helped cover the remaining shortfall to complete the purchase.
The charity has also been able to purchase a further second-hand minibus from the sale of two old vehicles, along with donations from members and support from Brecon Motors. This means that they will now have a back-up vehicle.
The new minibuses have replaced older models in the Brecon Dial-A-Ride fleet, ensuring that the community transport service is not only more reliable but also more comfortable for passengers, many of whom rely on the service for essential trips to medical appointments, shopping, social activities, and more.
As with all the minibuses that Brecon Dial-A-Ride runs, these newer vehicles are equipped with advanced accessibility features, making it easier for individuals using mobility aids and wheelchairs to embark and disembark safely and conveniently. The upgraded vehicles will also contribute to increased efficiency and reduced maintenance costs, allowing the charity to focus more resources on expanding its reach and services.
The team at Brecon Dial-A-Ride are extremely grateful for the generous donation.
"This donation couldn’t have come at a better time as we were facing ever increasing repair costs for the oldest two vehicles," said a spokesperson from Brecon Dial-A-Ride.
"We are extremely thankful to both our anonymous donor and the Percy Davies Trust for their incredible generosity. It will allow us to continue providing vital transport services to those in need within our community."
Looking to the future, Brecon Dial-A-Ride hopes to further extend its service area and continue to advocate for accessibility and inclusion. The organisation encourages others to support their mission, whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word about the valuable services they provide. Brecon Dial-A-Ride has been operating for more than four decadess and provides transport for older people and those with disabilities who may otherwise struggle to access public transport.
It is a lifeline service for many residents in the Brecon area and surrounding communities.
It relies heavily on volunteers who drive and support the service on a daily basis.
The charity says its drivers are not only trained, but also caring individuals who prioritise passenger comfort. All undertake MiDAS training.
The service provides a door-to-door transport option, helping members get to shops, social groups and health appointments. The organisation says it aims to ensure every passenger receives personal attention and support throughout their journey.
Its wider aim is to promote the health, wellbeing and independence of people with disabilities of all ages, including older residents, helping them to lead more independent lives.
